In New Orleans I witnessed what happens when people take action for their lives in a struggle for self-determination. With support from small organizations like ours, communities all over the region fought on many levels to have access to basic health care, to reopen their schools, to have decent jobs, to return to their homes and neighborhoods, and ultimately to decide their own fates. As I saw it, if there was ever a time and place for those of us with any amount of resources to put our principled political theories into action, this was it.
