In the case of teaching, most assistant professors arrive with some training for the classroom, acquired in both the composition and literature programs at their graduate schools. At Rutgers, graduate students have faculty mentors who observe their classes and work with them on teaching. This attention to teaching carries over into the mentorship of new assistant professors. Our History department has a teaching committee that visits every class of untenured faculty members at least once a term and addresses any issues that arise as well as providing a sounding board for new ideas.
