When I asked about the Watts riots and the White Front store, I expected him to recall the same story as Derard. [20] Rhone recalled Big Law and Lil Law were legends on Slauson Avenue.
He would be thrown out of nearly every school in the Los Angeles unified school district and then shipped out to the county schools. He was an accomplished fighter, and upon entering a new school, he would challenge the tougher and larger kids to fights to establish himself as someone not to be messed with. This habit would solidify his reputation early among the kids in the inner-city schools. The last school he attended was Fremont High School. Years later, when the reputation of Raymond Washington as the founder and leader of the Crips was solidly established, kids who had witnessed Raymond’s schoolyard battles would remember him and the ferocity of those battles.
Marcus Jones, another associate of Raymond, also agreed to be interviewed. He began by telling me the story of how he met Raymond and formed a friendship that lasted until Raymond’s death.
