If you wait six months or a year to make a decision, you may be tempted to spend the money you could have invested. You also will have "lost" the money your money could have earned had it been invested. It is not necessary to study and understand all the information and options available to you. Trying to do that will not only confuse you, but can discourage you from adhering to your overall goal: to have the investments and assets you need for the retirement you want. You also cannot plan for every eventuality in your life, so don't try to design a retirement plan for 14 different scenarios.
You will need more money 30 years from now than you need today just to buy the same groceries, fill the tank of the car, and pay for a place to live. The inflation rate changes month to month and year to year. During the 1950s and 1960s, it was about what it is today. Inflation soared to over 12 percent during the late 1970s, but fortunately, has gradually fallen to approximately 3 to 4 percent in the mid1990s. Even at this relatively low level, inflation will eat the value of your retirement dollars.
