Keller campaigned to better the living and working conditions of the blind and went on extensive fund-raising trips, often overseas, for the American Foundations for the Blind. Along with the growth of these organizations came the professionalization of fund-raising, an area of nonprofit employment that is still vibrant and growing today. The early twentieth century witnessed the establishment and growth of fund-raising agencies that solicited funds for causes such as World War I and the establishment of universities.

The adaption of business practices to voluntary action is a good thing. The problem is people come into management positions within the nonprofit organization out of business and forget to translate that service is the ultimate goal in the organization; it’s not to make money. So when they look at the business practices— the balance sheets, spreadsheets, et cetera—they are interpreting it in the context of the business environment rather than the nonprofit environment—I think that’s the problem.

Social groups like the Rotary, Kiwanis, and Lions clubs gained membership during this time, along with reform-oriented organizations that put pressure on public policies or laws that their members believed to be unjust. The NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) formed to stop lynching and race riots; other associations formed to reform child labor laws and advance women’s causes.
