I simply couldn’t take it in. When the verdict was delivered, the court erupted and the whole atmosphere immediately became heated and claustrophobic. I went into shock. I seemed to enter a dark tunnel and was not able to take in most of what was happening.

We had come back from a holiday in France in the summer of 1995 and, like virtually every other family, we’d brought back cheap bottles of French beer.
