Therefore, the growth of the firm is a path-dependent process, in the sense that the firm’s history affects critically the cognitive frameworks of the members, and thus the direction and the rate at which new knowledge is obtained, and becomes effective in their joint effort. The relevance of this analytical framework for the analysis of the process of innovation is, of course, obvious. Capabilities can be developed within the firm but can also be obtained through the market and, thus, the boundaries between these two types of institutions are not impregnable but have rather the character of a continuum of alternatives.
