Sanding pads Very new on the market, these are made from thin polyurethane foam with silicon carbide grit glued to both sides (see List of Suppliers). They come in fine and coarse grades and are very useful when sanding turnings. We now use them a great deal instead of garnet paper when papering polish. We do not use them on bare wood as they do not have a sharp enough cutting edge. Despite our comments above we have found that on these sanding pads the silicon carbide abrades the polish, but does not cut it.

It is best used on table bases and chairs. Button polish or special button polish should be used on top of pale amber varnish for the finishing stages. Special button polish This is usually used for the finishing stages after a 50:50 mix of button and amber varnish has been second coated on to a job. It gives a quick shine and helps to remove oil at the finishing stages. It should be used only on cheaper work and never on table tops. It should never be used in conjunction with heat-resisting pale polish.

Where the furniture to be repaired is more modern this is probably the best glue to use. Cramps are invaluable when holding a piece together to reglue it.
