All the institutional methods they have and know about - both in western democracies and in communist countries - are combinations of the partial method of majority-vote. Some economists (Le. Arrow and others) found out with some mathematical background that these methods cannot work, and they are aware of this methodologicallack. But the mathematical background with which they tried and failed to attack the problem is too simple for fitting reality and to solve the problem. That does not mean that every mathematican ought to attack it, but every mathematician ought to believe that his own investigations could one day be used for dangerous technologies and he therefore ought to take care that at least a sufficiently high percentage of other mathematicians attack the problem of unknown methods of democratic agreement, until it is solved in a sufficient manner.
Nor were any of the branches, greek geometry and arithmetic, conie sections, archimedean volume calculation, the fertilization of these areas with algebra in the Renaissance or Kepler's and Cavalieri's application of archimedean methods, alone sufficient to create analysis. Not until problems in one of these branches were treated with methods from some of the others, so that many different areas melted together, was analysis created. The moral of this story is that maybe we should teach our students to treat problems in one branch with methods from other ones, perhaps not to produce publications but as a good exercise in treating problems from reality.
