As the researcher, author, and hence ‘gatekeeper to the truth’ (Morgan 1999:330), however, I have necessarily reduced, filtered, interpreted, analysed, and reframed these raw data into a coherent, academic text, in which I trust participants1 will still recognize their ‘voices’ but for which, in its theoretical and empirical emphases and omissions, I bear full responsibility.

The first reconviction studies of adult Grendon graduates were published in the 1970s and were wholly discouraging. Newton (1971, 1973, discussed in Cullen 1997) successively compared the reconviction rates, after one to five years, of men who left Grendon between 1964 and 1966, with men with a seemingly similar offending profile who had received psychiatric treatment at HMP Wormwood Scrubs, or no treatment at HMP Oxford, and found no meaningful difference in their rate of reconviction.
