If you are not sufficiently trained or supervised, then you need to refer your client to another more appropriate therapist. If you work in a clinic that takes a variety of issues, each client will come in with different backgrounds and circumstances, and you cannot be an expert at CLIENTS IN NEED: INDIVIDUAL, SOCIAL, AND CULTURAL FACTORS 37 everything.

Some cultures value the open expression of emotions whereas others believe expression should be reserved. Be careful not to misinterpret someone who is emotionally reserved as resistant or someone who is emotionally expressive as unstable, because these may vary depending on the cultural background of your client. These are just a few areas that come to mind when thinking about cultural norms. There are others; the list could be virtually infinite. What we most want to convey here is that you must understand the norms of your client’s culture before making diagnoses or setting goals.
