Symptom coherence. Because presenting problems are tied to the ways clients construe, DOBT posits that even the most dumbfounding symptoms are coherent and meaningful - although this meaningful coherence may be initially difficult to spot. Client presenting problems are seen as tied to their ways of tacitly construing themselves and their relationships, so when clients lack conscious awareness of their own most core ordering processes, they too are befuddled by their own symptoms. Therapy becomes a means to assist clients in gaining insight into those constructions that they have created for themselves.

Some might argue, consistent with a relativist interpretation of personal construct psychology, that such a notion is inappropriate, a remnant of mechanistic theories and contrary to its central philosophy, which focuses on considering alternative perspectives. However, we do not believe that all constructions are as ‘good’ as each other, a position that Kelly also adopted. Indeed, we do not see how therapists can proceed in therapy without some broad aims, however much the specifics arise from the particular collaborative relationship with the client.

This form of therapy allows clients to take an experimental approach to exploring their relationships and experiences; that is, the therapist, in accordance with the client, develops hypotheses that may be tested for validity in the client's everyday life. Fixed-role therapy was originally meant to be quite brief and rather intense; to be carried out over a two-week period in which the client is asked to take on a different role or, in other words, assume a new identity.
