The balance of evidence suggests that screening for breast cancer has had positive results; perhaps most of all through a general stirring up effect that has encouraged improvements in early detection and staging.
A similar pattern can be seen for women aged 70ϩ while for women younger than 50, mortality has consistently been less than eight per 100,000 women.
