They had been sitting quietly in the families’ section, listening to Crown prosecutor Derrill Prevett’s opening statement on the first day of the trial, when Charlotte suddenly realized that it was her Marnie he was describing. Or rather, what was left of Marnie—a jawbone with three teeth, recovered from a pile of sifted dirt.

But when I look back now, I can see that his actions, or lack thereof, were a manifestation of the attitudes held by police, politicians and the civic leaders ruling Vancouver at the time. To them, women on the Downtown Eastside were unimportant and did not demand a search effort when they went missing. Not all the police officers I knew were indifferent to the women I worked with. Al Arsenault and Toby Hinton functioned more like advocates for marginalized women than beat cops. In 1998, Al and Toby, with five other Vancouver police officers, formed the Odd Squad, a non-profit organization whose main mandate is drug use prevention through awareness and education.
