The answers came readily. ‘On the twenty-seventh, on the Sunday, I went to Egan’s. I stayed there that night and on the Monday, the twenty-eighth, went to Richmond races with Egan and Taylor. I was with Taylor till about half past ten that night and left him in the city. I then went to No. 8 Princess Street, Fitzroy, and slept there that night and did not get up until about nine o’clock the next morning. I had a conversation with the woman of the house. I told her I could not pay for my room as I had lost my money on Wellshot.

The traveller staggered to the wall before collapsing in a bloody heap. Without hesitation the small intruder lifted the mattress and snatched away the moneybag. Mrs Trotter’s screams attracted several neighbours who called for an ambulance and for the police. On 7 January, after lingering in a coma for nearly six hours, Arthur Trotter died in St Vincent’s Hospital from the effect of the bullet that had penetrated his brain. The eight detectives assigned to the case combed every inch of the dwelling in search of clues to the identity of the burglars.
