Despite the range of theory and practice across the humanistic schools, it is possible to make some general observations as to its use of mental imagery.

The premise of rescripting is that deliberate changes made to the negative mental images associated with the condition will result in equivalent changes to the emotional response. Furthermore, as much of the consequent post-trauma disturbance is associated with memory, modifying the traumatic memory is a powerful means of treatment. Rescripting draws on previously developed methods of imaginal exposure and covert modelling discussed earlier. First, the client is directed to recreate the memories of the original trauma.

And, similarly to Mesmer’s patients over a century previously, their patients were reporting successful cures. Furthermore, these experimental procedures often contained an imagery component, and it is striking how much these 19th-century accounts seem to hark back to premodern practices in Ancient Greece, discussed earlier, such as the incubation methods in the Asclepian healing temples. Importantly, and especially pertinent to the history of the therapeutic use of mental imagery, practitioners were beginning to identify that during hypnotic states their patients would produce mental images that seemed to be the products of a helpful unconscious source.
