Sometime during the late 1940s Beto received a summons to report for jury duty, and subsequently served as a juror in a criminal trial where a black man was the defendant. After the conclusion of the trial Beto unabashedly expressed to the students in one of his classes at Concordia his doubts about the fundamental fairness one could expect in a criminal trial in Texas where the defendant was black.
