Stone Age man made his core, flake, and blade tools by a variety of methods, including percussion ( striking a stone core with a heavy, hand-held hammerstone or with a lighter bone or wooden "baton") ; pr essure flaking (splitting away flakes of stone with a pointed bone or stick ) ; and grinding and polishing.
After reheat ing, th e tool was qu ench ed by plungin g it in wa ter or other liquid. When th e ability to measure temperature accurately and kn owled ge of th e pr operti es of metal were limited , obtaining th e desir ed result of th e temp erin g pr ocess was largely accidenta l.
