What you do need to do is to pay consistent and reliable attention to all that is going on between you. You observe how the client behaves, you listen to all he says, you assess his impact on you, you attend to your own feelings and thoughts, you keep track of where you seem to be located in relation to each other and you monitor the fate of your own interventions and interpretations. Thus if you are so acutely present to all that is going on in the therapeutic exchange you have no time to concern yourself with what was said last time or with hoping that your client is getting better.

He may seek to insert himself compliantly, doing his utmost to fit in with you. Perhaps he will arrive on the dot and remove himself just as punctually. Alternatively he may arrive very early or very late. At times he may not appear at all and give no warning of his absence. In each instance the client is behaving significantly in terms of the boundaries you have set and therefore invites you to consider the meaning of his behaviour in relation to you. At the outset of your practice it is very easy to be so concerned with your own performance that you miss the efforts of the client to convey something to you through his behaviour.

As surely as the client seeks help for himself by coming into counselling he will also place obstacles in the way of this help. One of the ways in which the client will do this is to invite the counsellor into collusion. Basically what I mean by this is that the client will seek to establish a spurious sense of intimacy or mutuality from early on in the relationship. Some clients will do this by immediately addressing the counsellor by her first name or by talking in such a way as to suggest that they are both operating from basically the same position.
