Witchweed seeds are small and about 1500 seeds, placed end to end, would be only 1 ft long. They survive from 15 to 2 0 yr in soil and one plant produces up to 500,000 seeds. It is a good parasite o f corn because its 90- to 120-day life cycle is identical to corn's. One corn plant can support up to 5 0 0 witchweed plants. Witchweed seed will not germinate, in soil, in the absence o f the host-excreted stimulant or an artificial stimulant such as ethylene gas.
