Send in the Clones In 1999, an amazing project was undertaken—an attempt was made to clone a thylacine. Other animals have been cloned before. The most famous was Dolly the sheep, who was born in 1996 and died in 2003. The thylacine cloning project began at the Australian Museum, under the leadership of the museum’s director, Mike Archer. Unfortunately, Archer resigned from his position at the museum in 2004. Under new leadership, the museum terminated the costly project in early 2005. However, Archer announced a few months later that scientists at other research institutes were planning to resume the cloning project.

In August 2009, taxidermist Jerry Ayer of Blanco, Texas, received the hairless carcass of an odd-looking doglike critter.
