Now all sorts of rumors flew around Boston, saying that the troops had come to put the city under martial law, thus taking away everybody's freedoms, and to arrest some of the leaders of the American resistance to British rule. But the British troops did none of these things, and for the moment, at least, armed resistance did not break out in Boston. The interests of the two peoples were often different, and inevitably, many colonists had come to think of themselves as different, with different ideas, and sometimes conflicting needs. Americans had begun to think this way some time before 1763. But so long as the French were sitting directly north of them in Canada and had a chain of forts running down the Mississippi by means of which they could control a huge part of the continent, the Americans felt they needed the protection of the powerful British army and the mighty British navy.

Now, though many Americans believed that they would have to fight, more thought that if they rallied their militias, the British would back down. New Englanders assumed that the confrontation would take place in Massachusetts, which had been at the forefront of resistance to the British. Here men began to prepare. We should keep it in mind that every colony in America had an organized militia—companies of soldiers who met a few times a year to stay prepared to fight whatever enemies attacked them.
