The interests of the two peoples were often different, and inevitably, many colonists had come to think of themselves as different, with different ideas, and sometimes conflicting needs. Americans had begun to think this way some time before 1763. But so long as the French were sitting directly north of them in Canada and had a chain of forts running down the Mississippi by means of which they could control a huge part of the continent, the Americans felt they needed the protection of the powerful British army and the mighty British navy.
Now, though many Americans believed that they would have to fight, more thought that if they rallied their militias, the British would back down. New Englanders assumed that the confrontation would take place in Massachusetts, which had been at the forefront of resistance to the British. Here men began to prepare. We should keep it in mind that every colony in America had an organized militia—companies of soldiers who met a few times a year to stay prepared to fight whatever enemies attacked them.
