Launched in 1939, the Bismarck was a stunning battleship. From its bow (front end) to its stern (back end), the Bismarck stretched 823 feet. The ship also carried four floatplanes, 108 officers, and 1,962 enlisted men, all under the command of Captain Ernst Lindermann and Admiral Gunther Lutjens.
Although Britain was in danger of running out of fighter planes, it also didn’t have enough pilots. So the RAF was forced to use pilots from other countries: New Zealand, Australia, Canada, South Africa, the United States, and Poland. There was also one Jamaican. The Polish pilots turned out to be among the very best. But the RAF didn’t use them for several months because none of those men spoke English, so the RAF couldn’t tell if they actually knew how to fly a plane! But when the pilot shortage became critical, the RAF formed two Polish squadrons, the 302, and the 303.
