Vertical Blocks Miter joint is weak because the glued surfaces are end grain. Grain direction Wood movement Blocks with the grain running opposite that of the bracket foot are stacked apart. Horizontal Blocks Grain direction Wood movement Blocks with grain running in the same direction as the bracket foot are glued together. grain legs, as in the butternut chest on p. 45, are only slightly stronger because the glue surfaces of the miters are long grain. Corner blocks behind a bracket foot can run horizontally with the grain of the foot or vertically against it (see the drawings above).

Cut the corner of the fence at a right angle, then screw it to the base. It won’t matter if it’s mounted a little off a true 45 degree angle as long as you always cut one piece of the miter joint on the left side of the fence and the other on the right side. The cuts will always be complementary and mate perfectly. You can clamp a stop block to these blocks to make cuts of uniform length. After cutting the miters, do yourself a favor and take some time to prepare them for gluing. First check your cuts to see how well your saw performed.

If any adjustments to the miter fence or blade angle are necessary, take another slice off the sample sides and check the joint again. Remember to save all of your offcuts; you’ll be able to use them as clamping blocks later during glue-up. 2 2. CUT BOTH ENDS OF THE BOARD SWITCH MITER SLOTS, NOT SETTINGS. There’s no need to change the blade angle when cutting opposite ends of a box side; just flip the board edge for edge and move the miter gauge to the other side of the blade. Label the inside and outside faces of each part and lay out all of the cuts to keep track of them.
