Situations like these feel like defeat, leaving behind pain, loss, and uncertainty about the future. Think about how hopeless the disciples felt when they saw Jesus taken to the cross. Now consider the rest of the stories. The three prisoners, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, declared their faith to their enemies, saying, “If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to save us from it, and he will rescue us from your hand, O King.

So that’s what they did. They stepped into the water and whoosh, the water rolled back and a dry path appeared in the bottom of a muddy river. The point here is that God waited for them to get moving—to show their trust in him—before he began to move. Is there something you know God wants you to do? Sometimes our hearts can get dried up. We may feel as dry inside as Death Valley. When that happens, God seems far away. It’s easier then to do what we know is wrong. It’s easier to be angry. Our souls shrivel up. But God wants to bring life to our souls. He promises showers of blessings. He wants to fill up every dry valley in our life with his living water. And when he does, God will cause good things to grow in our lives. We just have to get to a place where his rain can fall on us. Sometimes that place is beside our bed when we pray.
