We include a brief and oversimplified description of the sensitization reaction, since this is one of the more common mechanisms by which chemicals cause harm. Chemicals that cause sensitization are called allergens (or antigens). A single exposure or, in some cases, several repeated exposures to an allergen by inhalation, skin contact, or ingestion may cause the body of the person exposed to manufacture antibodies that will react with the allergen.
