His father was horrified at Michelangelo’s decision to become an apprentice to a painter at the age of 13, wanting his son to become a businessman instead. Michelangelo studied painting and sculpture in the Medici gardens, where he came to the attention of Lorenzo the Magnificent, and soon was living in the Medici Palace. While there, he spent time with the two Medicis who would become Popes Leo X and Clement VII. During the regime of Girolamo Savonarola, Michelangelo went to Rome, to study its classical statues and ruins.

Two years after his father’s death, Cosimo de’ Medici decided to build a new home—a palace— for his family, near the Church of San Lorenzo.
