By the early 1980s, however, it was becoming clear from experience in Niger and elsewhere in the Sahel that the plantation approach was a dead end. Survival rates of planted trees were poor, and yields were often less than those of the natural woodlands that had been clear-cut to make way for the new plantations. With costs of harvested wood running up to ten times the retail selling prices of wood from natural woodlands, the economics of the plantations were hopeless. At the same time, research into the natural Sahelian woodlands was finding that their stocks and yields, especially if managed and protected, were considerably greater than previously thought.

If it can be expanded, the approach will have potential for replication over much of the Sahel and other countries in Sub-Saharan Africa.
