In chapter 3, I look at various safety issues in which these workers have become embroiled, from fatigue to air rage. I argue that attitudes toward safety have been—and continue to be—gendered in the sense that flight attendants have had to fight continuously to be taken seriously. Paradoxically, after 9/11, flight attendants finally won certification as safety professionals at exactly the time when their jobs were most under threat.
Despite guilt at leaving their families, flight attendants with small children, for instance, relish the opportunity to sleep in, take long baths, watch television, read, or do a host of other things that would be impossible if they were needed for parenting duties.
