Mark Miles first came up with the idea for IMOD screens while reading an article about butterfly wings in a science magazine. He began thinking about how he could imitate the butterfly’s structural color and what uses such technology would have. Before long, he realized that structural color would be useful for display screens. He started a company called Iridigm to research his ideas and develop the new technology. In 2004, Qualcomm was so impressed with Iridigm’s work that it bought the company for $170 million and turned its work into the Mirasol project.
