For the rest of his life, Michelangelo’s most distinct facial feature would be his misshapen, flattened nose. IN THE HOUSE OF THE MEDICIS Michelangelo’s talent at sculpting did not pass unnoticed by Lorenzo de’ Medici. In 1590, Medici commissioned sculptures to be placed inside the Learning His Craft vast Medici family library, which housed one of the greatest collections of manuscripts and books from the ancient world. Wanting to make a contribution to the collection, young Michelangelo borrowed a piece of marble from the library workers and began chiseling a sculpture of an aged faun, a mythical creature with a man’s head and a goat’s horns and ears.

He may also have worked on other statues, but it appears he either did not finish them or, perhaps, bought other marble blocks, but never even began work on them. When he finally finished his statue of Bacchus, he showed the work to Cardinal Riario. Unfortunately the cardinal was not happy with the statue. Apparently the cardinal’s challenge to Michelangelo had never been important, as the cardinal was only interested in ancient Roman statues, not modern ones. The work Michelangelo had poured into his sculpture was appreciated by someone else, however.

He constantly searched for new ways to learn more about the human form. Michelangelo even visited the Hospital of Santo Spirito, where he was allowed to cut open human corpses to find out how specific muscles were shaped. In Bologna, things went well for the young Michelangelo, who was approaching 20 years of age. By late 1495, despite his comfortable living conditions and sculpting work in Bologna, Michelangelo decided to return to Florence. He moved back into his father’s household. Although the young sculptor was home, Florence was no longer a comfortable place for an artist such as Michelangelo.
